This film completely subverts the traditional image of Ne Zha. The line “My fate is determined by me, not by heaven” absolutely set the whole audience on fire. Director Jiaozi, with his exquisite animation techniques, portrayed Ne Zha, the reincarnation of the “Demon Pill,” as both rebellious and lonely, making people feel a deep resonance amidst laughter.
Especially the friendship arc between Ne Zha and Ao Bing: one is a “demon,” the other a “spirit,” yet both bear the prejudices of the world. This struggle of “born a demon, yet yearning for light” allowed many adult viewers to see themselves in the story.
As for the visual effects, there’s no need to say much; the long take in the “Mountains and Rivers, Society, and Nationality” scroll is truly a visual feast. However, beyond the technical aspects, it was the pacing of the plot and the character development that truly made it legendary.
